Workplace stress is one of the most challenging issues in many institutions.
Recently due to the competitive nature of many institutions in this global age,
employers have placed more demands on employees work especially in the private
educational sector. This has brought excessive pressure which is beyond employees‟
abilities and their capacity hence inhibiting individual functioning, productivity and
performance. The increase level of this stress has led to a change in the behavior of
employees and their attachment with the work. Stress is therefore seen to be
detrimental to the health of employees, health of organization and its performance.
This research examines the studies on workplace stress and its effects on performance
and how these effects can be managed in the organization. The objective of the
research was to identify the stressors at the workplace, to examine the effect of
workplace stressors on employees‟ performance and lastly, to identify strategies used
in handling stress at the workplace. Both primary and secondary data collection
method were used. The total population for the study was 100 and the sample size
used was 50 whereas systematic sampling technique was employed. It was found that
workload, longer working hours, not designing job to meet employees strength,
weakness and their pressure point were workplace stressors. It was recommended that
the management needs to know the employees strength, weakness and their pressure
point, balancing work life, with better social support in order to reduce stress and to
improve performance.

This study assessed private property developer‟s involvement in urban
development decision in metropolitan Kano. It is commonly acknowledged that
private property developers provides over 90% of the properties in Nigeria, but
despite this massive strides they are not involved in decisions making regarding
urban development. Primary data for the study was acquired through administration
of questionnaire to 127 property developers in Kano metropolis comprising of 114
private individuals and 13 corporate respondents. The major findings of the study
reveals extreme negligible involvement of developers in almost all the aspects of
urban development decisions such as access to land, infrastructural provision and
housing finance. Respondents suggested involvement in the form of empowerment,
collaboration, consultation, information sharing and active involvement by the
government and urban managers. The study concludes by recommending
collaboration between the government and private sector in order to boost the
activities of private property developers in the spirit of Private-Public Partnership.

Information plays a key role in helping the recovery of patients of alcohol
and drug abuse (ADA). In the rehabilitation centres, ADA patients are engaged in a
treatment programme and are expected to integrate back to the society and become
productive people. Alongside other medical procedures, information plays an
important role in helping in the recovery of patients of alcohol and drug abuse. This
study aims to evaluate the access and use of information services to patients of
alcohol and drug abuse in Nairobi County, the case of Asumbi Treatment Centre and
to suggest ways in which they can be enhanced. The objectives of this study were: to
determine the information needs ADA patients in the rehabilitation centre; to establish
information seeking habits of ADA patients; to find out how ADA patients use
information; to assess the existing information services available to ADA patients; to
find out the challenges faced by ADA patients in accessing and using information,
and to suggest ways of enhancing provision of information services to ADA patients
in rehabilitation centres. This research adopted a case study design and the approach
was mixed, having both qualitative and qualitative approaches. The findings revealed
that ADA patients have their unique information needs and they experience
challenges of accessing and using information. The study identified inadequate
facilities for ADA patients to access and use information services in the rehabilitation
centre. Among the major recommendations in this study is that ADA rehabilitation
centres should establish information centres, and in addition, offer bibliotherapy
services to its patients.

10.21276/sjhss.2017.2.9.8
In this age of information explosion no library is able to satisfy all the
needs of its users due to various constraints. It is because of this phenomenon that the
concept of library IMS has developed. To achieve this, those who are responsible for
the libraries should take into account their active and passive users. Furthermore, not
only the academicians who make use of the libraries but also those who do not make
use of them should be considered. It is against this background that this study main
purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of opens source Integrated
Management Information Systems (MIS) in Libraries, Strathmore University as a
case. The objectives of the study were: to determine the effectiveness of open source
integrated information management system in use at Strathmore university library, to
find out the users’ attitudes towards the integrated management information system at
Strathmore University Library’, to find out the challenges facing the integrated
management systems in Strathmore university and suggest recommendations that
would help in improving the use of Koha at Strathmore University Library. The study
utilized a case study and was carried out within Strathmore University. The study
found out that the integration of information management system in the provision of
library service is to a great degree perceived to be effective. However, there was need
for improvement. The findings further revealed that, most members of staff and
students have positive attitudes towards the use of Koha at the Strathmore University
library. This implies that they would appreciate being trained to use it and support any
efforts to improve the system. The study concluded that there were still enormous
challenges in integration of the management information system in Libraries due
some reasons for instance the constant change of software, internet failure and the
lack of technology know how among some clients. The study recommended that there
is need for continuous training to students and staff to keep then abreast of the
technological changes of integrated information systems and innovative strategies of
dealing with the challenges associated with Koha.

Scientific discoveries put forth new trends in the education during modern
times. These trends influenced all aspects of human society. Scienticism is considered
modern day religion, ideology and are more relevant and applicable for contemporary
society. The perception, all matter being composed of small, indivisible particles
called atoms is the base of matter, from which every object has its existence. From its
earliest in the second century of the hijra, kalam has always been enthralled with the
theory of atoms. In this paper an attempt has been made to discuss, elaborate and
analysis with certain divergence the issue of atomism. The broad theory was generally
endorsed by both the Mu‟tazilite‟s and Ash‟arites and their views, difference of
opinion on the said issue, along with other medieval Muslim Scholars will be
discussed at length. Their concept about the role of atom in matter formation in early
Muslim scholar writings will serve the base for this paper.

10.21276/sjhss.2017.2.9.3
The fishing community is fisherman patorani community that specifically
captures the parent and fish eggs "Torani" (flying fish). The fishing community
estimated patorani born since the 17th century and operate locally around the
Sulawesi Sea, and catch fish species Torani and even other fish species. Since the
birth until the early 20th century are still relying on the screen (Sombala) as a boat
towing machine and rely on wind power. This study focused on social change
traditional fishermen to fishers patorani. This study used qualitative methods
descriptive, and data retrieval preliminary observation, interviews and documentation.
Informants consisted patorani fishermen, boat owners and owners of capital. The
research found that social change occurs due to the internal state of the orientation of
the needs and dynamics of the owners of capital, while externally caused by the
influence of the market on the fishing community by promising greater income and
special one species of fish and fish eggs Torani. Changes it, then forcing the
fishermen to make fundamental changes include a shift in social relations that were
once family-oriented and then turn to the professional relationship and the contractual
and binding.

We describe the first case report of an Adult Onset Still’s Disease (AOSD)
in a previously healthy young man from Jazan, Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2017.
The patient symptoms, signs and investigations fulfilled Yamaguchi’s criteria for the
diagnosis of Adult Onset Still’s disease [1]. The patient experienced a sore throat,
high grade fever, right knee arthralgia, left knee arthritis, a generalized salmon
colored rash, leukocytosis, elevation of liver transaminases, high LDH, high ferritin,
absence of ANA, RF, AMA, ASMA and DNA and reactive bone marrow aspiration
and biopsy without any evidence of infectious diseases etiologies or malignancies that
were satisfactory to confirm the diagnosis of AOSD. We have observed an evidence
of two different bacterial sources simultaneously as triggering etiologies; positive
ASO titer and positive blood culture for E. Coli where the clinical features and
laboratories investigations derangement post antibiotics treatment have remained. The
patient has responded to the pulse methylprednisolone and tapering doses of
prednisolone. Our successful clinical experience in the case is that the prednisolone
lower doses combined with NSAID (voltaren) to minimizing the steroid adverse
effects was sufficiently effective to maintaining remission.

There are various grafting materials used for socket preservation of the
alveolar ridge following tooth extraction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate
clinically and histomorphometrically healing after tooth extraction with or without
placement of a synthetic bone graft and determine the effect on alveolar ridge
preservation following extraction. 30 subjects in need of extraction of non-molar teeth
were recruited for this study. Recruited subjects were randomly assigned to the group
A (with graft material) or control (without graft material) group B. Data were recorded
at 6 months after socket preservation procedures. At 6 months, a surgical re-entry was
performed; Clinical Measurements and bone core biopsies were obtained for
histomorphometric analysis. The control group B had a mean reduction in ridge height
of 1.26mm, whereas alveolar ridge height in the test group A was 0.73mm. The test
group A was 7.33 ± 1.01 mm compared to 7.23 ± 1.13 mm in group B which were not
statistically significant (p = 0.684). Histomorphometric analysis revealed total new
bone volume in group A represented 65.6 ± 11% connective tissue 25.6 ± 10.18 %
and 8.8% was occupied by residual graft material. The mean new bone volume in
group B was 31.23 ± 7.24%, whereas connective tissue formation was approximately
68.78 ± 7.24 %. Both these values were statistically significant when compared with
group A. There was no relation with residual graft material as there was no graft
material used in group B. A positive response was observed when synthetic graft was
applied to extraction sockets, suggesting that it may be useful for preservation of ridge
height prior to dental implant placement.

The significance of effective leadership and management for the successful
operation of schools and colleges has been increasingly acknowledged in the 21st
century. The trend towards self-management in the United Kingdom and in many
other parts of the world has led to an enhanced appreciation of the importance of
managerial competence for educational leaders. Today, leadership is seen as central
and essential to delivering the changes, improvement and performance that
community increasingly expects of all organizations including schools. The changing
manner of school management has undoubtedly created reforms in the field of
education with change expressed in the evolution from exterior supervision of school
work to the empowerment of school’s staff, principal’s and teacher’s roles. This study
was initiated to look into the leadership style among school principals in governing
school systems in Peninsular Malaysia. Secondary data consisting of various
leadership styles used in administering teachers, transformational and transactional
leadership and the correlation between leadership styles and organizational variables,
relationship between value systems and school principal’s principles were performed.
Numerous researches have highlighted the fact that leadership behavior is a predictor
of its efficacy and leads to the examination of leadership evolution. In this study,
leaders with a high moral value system tend to lean towards a transformational
leadership style in governing school systems in Peninsular Malaysia and
acknowledges a positive correlation between leadership styles and value systems in
school administration.

The main objectives of the study are to further explore the connection
between conceptual metaphor and the language expression structures through the
comparative analysis of the conceptual metaphor in the commencement speeches of
universities between English and Chinese. It also studies the meaning, cultural
characteristics, similarities and differences of the two languages so that it can give a
proper interpretation of how the cultural factors works on the language structure and
semantic expressions. The conceptual metaphor was regards as a system of human
conceptualization. Speeches addressed on graduation ceremonies by great people who
are admired by the university students play a vital role in their lives. So the
comparative study of conceptual metaphor in Chinese and American commencement
speeches is necessary.

Chronic Periodontitis is considered to be common dental disease with high
tooth mortality as well as morbidity. Reports from different places around the world
showed a prevalence of severe periodontitis in around 8-10% of the Population;
Sweden 8%, England 7%, The Netherland 10%, Italy 9.6 % and Srilanka 8 %. The
aim of the survey was to estimate the prevalence of chronic periodontitis among Saudi
nationals in Aljouf Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. 310 subjects were selected by
stratified cluster sampling technique. They were examined in preselected areas of
Aljouf region by using community periodontal index of treatment need. The impact of
known risk factors for periodontal disease, e.g., oral hygiene habits, age and smoking.
53% of the subjects and 15.8% of the sextants. Shallow pockets were observed in
39.4% of the subjects and 38.4% of the sextants. Calculus was found to be present in
9.8% of the subjects and 48.8 % of the sextants. Calculus was maximum (53%) in
group I (30-40 years) and minimum (21%) in Group IV (60 years and above).
Periodontal disease was found to be highly prevalent in the study population (90%)
and the periodontal treatment needs increased with advancing age. Nationwide surveys
are recommended to assess the periodontal disease which helps in planning prevention
and treatment of periodontal diseases.

In this theoretical investigation, a mathematical model is developed to
study the effect of multiple stenoses on flow characteristics of streaming blood
through the atherosclerotic artery. The Bingham plastic fluid model of blood has been
utilized in the study to represent the non-Newtonian character of blood. The geometry
of the asymmetric shape of the stenosis assumed to be manifested in the arterial
segment is given due consideration in the analysis. An extensive quantitative analysis
is performed through numerical computations on flow resistance, wall shear stress
and their variations are presented graphically for different stenotic and other
rheological parameters. It is observed that the stenotic and physical parameters have
considerable effect in the flow behaviour. Some important observations having
medical interest on the flow of blood in the stenosed arteries are presented. The
investigation bears the potential to explore a variety of information regarding some
phenomenological aspects of the physiological problem. The output of the
investigation may provide supplementary support to the physician in the treatment of
the fatal disease.

10.21276/sjeat.2017.2.9.1
The operational status of a hydropower dam is described as either
satisfactory or unsatisfactory. The ability of existing and proposed hydropower dams
to operate satisfactorily under wide range of possible future demands and hydrologic
conditions is an important system characteristic that can be assessed by estimating the
reliability (the probability that a system will remain in a non-failure state), resilience
(the ability of a system to return to non-failure state after a failure has occurred) and
vulnerability (the likely damage of a failure event) of the system. The main sources of
the data and other useful information for this research were previous research works,
government documents, bulletins and gazettes from hydropower related ministries,
agencies and organizations. Desktop analysis was carried out to estimate the water
requirement to generate power by various combinations of units at the Jebba
hydroelectric dam. Linear programming was used to obtain the monthly reservoir
releases that maximized annual total energy generation. Both monthly and annual
simulations were carried out using the operation policies from the LP optimization
algorithm and the generated inflow series. Duration of the failure event (d(j)), the
total number of failure events (M) and the deficit volume of the failure event (v(j))
were obtained from the simulation processes and used to evaluate the reliability,
resilience and vulnerability of the Jebba dam. The results obtained showed that the
performance of Jebba hydropower dam when three or more units are in use is
generally poor. The reliability obtained over the period of historical record varied
from 0.024 for six units to 0.994 for one unit in use. Reliability based on the
optimized operation policy was not less than 60% and was as high as77%. The
resilience was 0.292 and vulnerability was 3298.19 Mm3 at 60% reliability. These
results confirm that the operational status of the dam can be improved by adopting
real time reservoir release policies obtained by optimization of the reservoir
operation.

10.21276/sjeat.2017.2.9.2
Groundwater is a natural resource that is of immense importance to life
and its characteristics are greatly determined by the properties of the immediate
geologic formations. Generally, the development of groundwater resource involves
three main stages: exploration, evaluation and exploitation. This study focuses on the
evaluation stage, which generally encompasses measurement of hydrologic
parameters, and estimation of aquifer yield. The analysis of pumping test data
collected for 17 wells spread across Kogi state was used to determine the hydraulic
parameters of the aquifers within the study area. Transmissivity values ranged from
0.751 – 8.92 m2/day, hydraulic conductivity ranged from 0.0867–1.33 m/day,
pumping rates ranged from 1.13 – 8 l/s, while the borehole depths ranged from 11.3 –
202 m. Groundwater maps of the hydraulic parameters were also developed for the
study area. These results show that the aquifers within the study area can provide
between 5000 to 40,000 litres of water per day. The aquifers can therefore serve as
sustainable and dependable sources of water all year round with sufficient water to
meet the domestic needs in many small rural communities of Kogi state.
