Urinary tract infections are defined as the spectrum of diseases of the genito urinary tract by micro organisms. The risk of
urinary tract infection (UTI) is higher in diabetics and the antibiotic resistance of uropathogens have been changing over
the past few years. Hence, the study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of various uropathogens and their
antibiotic sensitivity pattern in diabetic patients with UTI. Methods: Clean voided midstream urine was collected, &
inoculated on Blood Agar (BA) and McConckey Agar (MA), and incubated at 37OC overnight for visible growth.
Results: Out of 120 diabetic patients, 75 patients (30 males and 45 females) were found to have culture positive UTI. The
rate of isolation of Klebsiella species (50%) was highest, followed by Escherichia coli (16.6%), Staphylococcus aureus
(16.6%), Coagulase negative Staphylococcus (12.5%) and Citrobacter species (4%). All the isolated organisms showed
maximum sensitivity to Carbapenems and least susceptibility to Norfloxacin and Nitrofurantoin. Conclusion: High blood
glucose is the main cause of UTI among diabetics. Therefore, isolation of pathogens in diabetic patients with UTI is
important to initiate appropriate antibiotic therapy and to prevent renal complications

Choriocarcinoma is a malignant proliferation of the trophoblastic epithelium, not including chorionic villi but permanent vascular invasion. It is a rare tumor, most often of gestational origin, occurring in 75% of cases after a molar pregnancy. Choriocarcinoma in postmenopausal period is very rare however some cases of choriocarcinoma developing after a long latency period from the last pregnancy have been reported. We report an original case of a postmenopausal woman with non-gestational endometrial choriocarcinoma occurring 14 years after menopause. There are no well-defined guidelines for the treatment of postmenopausal choriocarcinomas. Their prognosis is very unfortunate, yet it has changed completely, from 19% to 90% survival since the onset of chemotherapy

Beta thalassemia is one among the commonest hereditary haemolytic disorders that result from defective synthesis of haemoglobin and ineffective erythropoiesis. Very less data is available in the early identification of renal involvement in patients with thalassemia. Renal impairement in thalassemic patients may be due to chronic anemia, chronic hypoxia, iron overload and iron chelators toxicity. The objective of the study was to estimate renal parameters in pediatric age group with transfusion dependent beta thalassemia major and to correlate the outcome with the degree of iron overload. The study consists of 30 diagnosed cases of beta thalassemia major aged between 3-18 yrs admitted in Vani Vilas Hospital attached to BMC&RI, Bangalore and 30 healthy age and sex matched controls. Blood samples were analyzed for hemoglobin, serum urea, creatinine and spot urine sample for microalbumin. Data analysis was done by Pearson’s Correlation analysis and Student’s t test. Mean age of cases was 8.9 years (SD=4.14) among whom 50% were females and 50% were males. Mean age of controls was 9.06 years (SD=3.5). Mean hemoglobin levels were decreased significantly (p<0.01) in cases when compared to controls. Mean urinary microalbumin excretion was significantly increased (p<0.01) in cases as compared to controls and positively correlated with duration of chelation, suggesting renal damage. Therefore microalbuminuria is important to assess the risk of renal dysfunction in these patients.

Medicinal plants have played a key role in world health. Plants and their products have been used since time immemorial
as principal ingredients of various traditional medicines. It has been the mainstay of many traditional cultures for their
low cost and wide accessibility in addition to their preventive and therapeutic value. The aim of this research was to
evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of T. catappa methanolic leaf extract and its fractions. The antioxidant
activity was determined using DPPH radical scavenging activity using varied concentrations (31.25-500µg/ml) of
different extracts and fractions then 100µl of purified water at absorbance of 515nm using ELISA plate reader. Ascorbic
acid was used as a standard. The antibacterial activity was evaluated by determining the MIC and MBC of different
fractions at different concentration. The results of the study indicated the presence of major phyto-compounds like
alkaloids, steroids, phenolics and saponins. It also showed that the ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions of the leaf of T.
Catappa possess the highest significant scavenging activity against DPPH• (64.02% at 250μg/ml and 62.43% at 500
μg/ml respectively). Moreover, total phenolics concentration equivalent to gallic acid was found to be up to 70 mg/g for
the ethyl acetate fraction, which correlated with antioxidant activity. The result of the antibacterial study showed
evidence that, the methanol leaf extract of T. Catappa possess antibacterial activity and N. butanol portion has the highest
activity. In conclusion this study showed that the methanol extract and fractions of the leaf of T. Catappa have
demonstrated significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities but further study is recommended to ascertain the
compounds responsible for their antioxidant activity.

The epithelial tumors of the ovary are very varied in nature, they often pose difficult diagnostic problems: on the one hand to assert their organicity so as not to overtreat a functional lesion and on the other hand to appreciate their benign or malignant nature. Among them, we can mention the ovarian fibroma which is a rare tumor representing less than 1% of all ovarian tumors. Cases of cystic degeneration of this fibroma simulating ovarian cancer are described in the literature. We report a case of this type of degeneration affecting ovarian fibroma and taken for ovarian cancer, despite the explorations in medical imaging, but considering the appearance of the mass and the absence of peritoneal carcinomatosis at the exploratory laparotomy, a Limited excision was recommended pending the results of the pathological examination in the diagnosis of this malformation. Through this observation, we will analyze the symptomatology of this clinical form which mistakenly mimics an ovarian cancer and also discuss the interest of ultrasound and the determination of tumor markers in the diagnostic approach as well as the therapeutic attitude to adopt in this clinical form

10.21276/jaep.2019.3.8.4
It is undisputable that by and large, the general citizenry and governments of the Sub-Sahara Africa is of late pretty much
come to align higher education to economic assurance than ever before. This has witnessed a considerable increase in the
number of institutions of higher learning established and a number of students enrolling into these institutions. It can be
deduced that such an increase challenges the quality assurance in its provision. It is therefore imperative for African
states to put a great deal of emphasis on quality assurance procedures as they discharge the provision of university
education. This paper explores literature on quality assurance procedures in universities in developing countries with
particular reference to public and private universities in Tanzania. The perception of quality in university education is
first analysed alongside the divert views of quality assurance mechanism, and with the scaling up of the approaches to
quality assurance. The paper concludes that universities in developing countries should aim at implementing quality
assurance procedures for institutional effectiveness and service and/or programme quality.

The oxidative stress results because of the disturbance in systemic equilibrium of the oxidants and antioxidants. However, when there is increase in the generation of the free radicals such as reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS and RNS respectively), then there is a shift in this systemic equilibrium. Various environmental and lifestyle factors such as pollutants, alcohol consumption, smoking, poor diet and other adverse habits contribute towards the oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can affect systemically (the whole body) as well as locally (in oral soft tissues).Various recent literatures have shown that the oxidative stress and inflammation are predisposing factors for various chronic illnesses, like atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes and periodontitis
