Papiackum Proverbial Discourse and Social Engineering: A reading in Functionalism

Nation building is an unending process in most if not all nations of the world. This urge for progress has spurred many nations to work in a bid to changing their status from developing, developed to emerging nations. In this guise, nations are constantly faced with challenges which may be political, economic and socio- cultural in their drive towards national reconstruction. This study therefore examines the pedagogic relevance of Papiackukm proverbial discourse in meeting challenges associated with national development. From the theoretical paradigm of Functionalism, this paper is based on the prism that Papiackum proverbial discourse are speech acts element embedded with norms and values that promote broad-based development by addressing some hurdles related to the process of nation building. The Papiackum is a speech community in the Ngoketunjia Division, North West Region of the Republic of Cameroon.

Taboos and Euphemistic Idioms in Ejagham: A Sociopragmatic Analysis

A People’s culture is embedded in its language. This is the case of the Ejagham community and its language, an Ekoid Bantu language of the Benue Congo family spoken in the Manyu Division of the South West Region of Cameroon and in the Cross River state of Nigeria [1]. Culture observes some restricted domains which are not talked about freely, generally known as taboos. The Ejagham speakers, in order to communicate, substitute these areas of restriction with the use of less offensive expressions known as euphemisms; thereby avoiding the occurrence of taboos. This article highlights some taboo related areas in the Ejagham culture, and shows the euphemistic idioms used by Ejagham speakers to talk about certain restricted areas (death, marriage, sex) during verbal interactions. Social cohesion is therefore guaranteed as face saving strategies are used.

The Semantic Differences of English and Chinese “地” from the Perspective of Functional Equivalence and Translation Teaching Strategies

Different nations and different environments have led to huge differences between cultures, forming different forms of cultural models. In the process of English-Chinese translation, in order to ensure the accuracy and correspondence of translation, translators tend to follow Nida's functional equivalence theory. This theory advocates formal equivalence and emphasizes dynamic equivalence. In practical translation application, functional equivalence theory is of guiding significance to English-Chinese translation. In terms of language, the same meaning is expressed differently in different cultures.“地”has different semantic meanings in English and Chinese. This article will discuss the different semantic meanings of the differences and similarities between Chinese and English by comparing the difference between “地” in Chinese and English idioms and poems. The differences in the characteristics of Chinese and English languages mainly come from the following factors: the influence of geographical environment and lifestyle, the restriction of religious belief, and the differences in thinking modes.

The Study of “S” As a Verbal Agreement Marker in Modern English Grammar

The present article is devoted to the study of “S” in modern English grammar. It examines the behavior of this operator in the English language. Thus, the study shows that this marker plays a very important role in the functioning of this English language. Its origin and status have created a lot debates around the linguistic and grammar fields. Though there have been some studies on its history, many speculations on its origin have been based on inferences from synchronic variation. In addition, focusing on its function and position towards the verb or the noun we have pointed out “S” can be used as verbal agreement marker or as noun agreement marker. In so doing, the role it plays, as a verbal marker is totally different from the one its plays as noun marker. But this current study is focused on its status as a verbal agreement marker.

In this global village characterized by communication, globalization and verbal interaction; these different words have become obligatory that we cannot do nothing without them. Dschang University, provides efforts to students to enable them to communicate. One of its primary objectives is to provide the student with an effective tool allowing them to easily communicate with others in specific social circumstances. To learn and master a language is to be able to communicate in that language, therefore to act and interact effectively, by speaking it correctly. How can we assess the effectiveness of this communication in the university environment of Dschang?
